Social & Community Participation

Community Participation

Social and Community Participation is funding available in the CORE and CAPACITY BUILDING sections of your NDIS Plan. You can find it specifically under Core Supports as “Assistance with Social and Community Participation” (Support Category 1.04).

This funding aims to support your engagement in community activities, improve your social skills, and enhance your overall well-being through meaningful connections and active participation in various social and recreational endeavours.

What is Social and Community Participation?

Social and Community Participation is a category of support provided under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia. It is designed to assist NDIS participants in engaging with their community, participating in social activities, and developing essential social skills.

The aim is to enhance their overall well-being, independence, and quality of life by fostering meaningful connections with others and being actively involved in community life.

The Social and Community Participation funding aims to enable NDIS participants to be active members of their communities, promoting inclusion, social interaction, and a sense of belonging.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) includes two broad categories of supports in a participant’s plan: CORE supports and CAPACITY BUILDING supports.

Assistance with Social and Community Participation (Core Supports)

Assistance with Social and Community Participation is a specific support category under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Assistance with Social and Community Participation falls in support category 4 under Core Supports.

It is designed to help NDIS participants actively engage with their community and participate in various social activities, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion.

This support may include funding various activities and services promoting social interaction, community engagement, and skill development. Activities that involve face-to-face services are only included in this category of funding.

Some examples of what Assistance with Social and Community Participation may cover include:

  • Attending personal development courses
  • Joining social groups
  • Going on outings or holidays
  • Participating in holiday camps
  • Visiting local libraries
  • Attending movies or concerts
  • Joining sporting clubs
  • Attending community events

This support aims to enhance the participant’s social skills, encourage meaningful connections with others, and enable active participation in community life.

By promoting social and community engagement, individuals with disabilities can experience improved well-being, increased self-confidence, and a greater sense of community belonging.

Participants work with their NDIS planner to identify the specific activities and services that align with their interests and goals.

Increased Social and Community Participation

Increased Social and Community Participation is a specific capacity-building support category under the NDIS. Increased Social and Community Participation comes in support category 9 under Capacity Building Supports.

This support empowers NDIS participants to develop and enhance their social and community engagement skills, leading to increased active involvement in community activities and social interactions.

Increased Social and Community Participation provides training, coaching, and resources to help individuals become more actively involved in their communities and social settings.

Increased Social and Community Participation aims to build an individual’s capabilities and confidence, leading to greater independence and increased participation in various social and community-based activities.

Here are some other examples of what funding under Increased Social and Community Participation may include:

  1. Cooking Classes: Funding for a limited number of cooking classes to allow a participant to explore their culinary interests and build their cooking skills. This support enables them to try out different recipes and cooking techniques.
  2. Outdoor Adventure Activities: Financial assistance to attend outdoor adventure camps or groups that focus on building teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. These activities could include hiking, camping, or team-building challenges.
  3. Adaptive Sports Equipment: Funding to purchase adaptive sports equipment, such as a specially designed basketball wheelchair, to enable a participant to participate in wheelchair basketball or other adapted sports actively.
